The annual Pick n Pay Knysna Oyster Festival has long been attracting festinos from all over the country and this year it has caught the attention of SA cricketing legend Jonty Rhodes. Rhodes may have retired from representing his country on the cricket pitch, however his ability to set a game alight with his incredible performances both as a fielder and batsman will never be forgotten. It was Jonty Rhodes who came into the game of cricket and set the benchmark for other players to aspire to at all levels. Never one to be satisfied with his performance and always striving to improve, Jonty Rhodes has continued his passion by taking part in other sports disciplines. The Salomon Featherbed Trail Run presented by Petzl has been his draw card for this year’s Knysna Oyster Festival. Joining his brother Clinton, Jonty Rhodes will see how quickly he can run what has become the new cult event of this ever popular festival. Trail Running is one of the fastest growing sports on the planet and this growth has enabled people from all walks of life to enjoy a pastime in predominantly wilderness environments with the piece of mind of being safe and secure. This wilderness experience has also attracted both Rhodes brothers to enjoy activities together. Clinton Rhodes had reached a stage in his life when he was hitting 150 kgs in weight and his chances of suffering a fatal heart attack had become his reality. Brother Jonty was not going to let this happen and embarked on a mission to help get Clinton back into a fit and healthy way of living. Part of this rehab process involved them teaming up with each other, and taking on various challenges which not only proved the importance of the strong family unit, but also that it is not impossible to bring yourself back from the brink, irrespective of the obstacles. Earlier this year both Rhodes brothers entered and completed the 3 day Sani2C Mountain Bike Race. Come July they will take on the challenge of the Featherbed Trail Run together and having never done anything like this before it will be more proof of this very special bond that has been created between Jonty and Clinton. “We are very privileged to have the Rhodes brothers select a Magnetic South event during the Festival. Our company has long endorsed the importance of the family unit with the type of events we organise and what a positive impact taking part in any sport or activity together has on relationships,” remarked Mark Collins, Race Director for the Salomon Featherbed Trail Run presented by Petzl. So get down to the Featherbed Ferry Terminal at Cruise Café on 6 July and catch the Rhodes brothers in action.
